How to find out who sold your Gmail Address to Spammers
Security on January 18th, 2010 Comments

I find myself getting more and more spam from random spammers now a days, and it is quite a pain. So I have figured out a way to figure out who exactly is selling my email address to these horrible horrible people, and to be short, it is quite simple. Just follow these steps and you will be all set lickity split!

  1. Every time you sign up for a new website, be it Facebook, MySpace, or any random message board.. anything, you enter your email address like this: youremail+the-websites-name@gmail.com.
  2. Gmail doesn’t recognize any part of the email after the “+” symbol, so all Gmail will see is “youremail@gmail.com”.
  3. Whenever you get any sort of junk or spam, simply check your Gmail inbox and click on the “Show Details” link to expand the information, and then anything after the + is the website that you signed up on, for example: youremail+facebook@gmail.com would mean you signed up for Facebook with this email, meaning Facebook sold your email! Dirty jerks!

You may be wondering why exactly this might be useful, well, it’s best if the website has some sort of privacy information, because if they did and they failed to uphold their Privacy Policy, then you can sue them if they lied.

I hope this helped out someone, it’s great knowing that you have a little extra security in place here and there :)
